Sights of Pula

The city has a very old history. Pula was an important city in ancient Rome. Even today, the old buildings from antiquity attract many tourists. World famous is the amphitheatre of Pula (also called Arena, picture below). It was the sixth largest Roman amphitheatre and is perhaps the best preserved large Roman amphitheatre anywhere. Bloody games with wild animals and gladiators took place here almost 2000 years ago. It is by far the biggest sight in Pula and in the whole of Istria. We have written a separate article about the amphitheatre. You can find it on this page.

The main square of Roman, ancient Pula, the Forum, is also a great sight of the city of Pula in southern Istria. It is still the most important square in the centre of Pula (today Republic Square). The most interesting building here is the Roman temple of Augustus (picture below small building on the left). It was built a few years after Christ, so it is 2000 years old. There is now a small museum in the temple of Augustus (10 kuna, 1.50 euro entrance fee).

Another important sight in the centre of Pula is the Sergius Arch (arcus Sergii). A triumphal arch and gateway, which is supposed to commemorate a successful battle a few years before the construction around Christ’s birth (picture below). The pedestrian zone behind the arch leads to the Forum.
