History of Njivice

The history of Njivice dates back to ancient times and there is evidence of settlements from Roman times. Originally a small fishing village, Njivice has developed into an attractive tourist destination while retaining its traditional character. The town is surrounded by lush greenery, olive groves and vineyards that reflect its agricultural heritage. Today, Njivice is touristy but far from being a party town. An ideal small holiday resort for families, for example.

Boat tour Krk

In Punat at the harbor in the center a few kilometers from Krk town, the most popular boat tour on Krk (day tour) among tourists starts, the “5 island tour”. You can see several islands, often vultures and the famous Blue Cave. There are also stops for swimming and much more. Well done and varied. Great atmosphere. Getting to Njivice

Njivice is easy to reach by road. The nearest airport is Rijeka Airport, located on the island of Krk, just 10 kilometers from Njivice. Visitors can also arrive in Krk by ferry from the mainland or other Croatian islands. By car, the island of Krk is connected to the mainland by a bridge, making it easy to reach from Croatia’s larger cities. Njivice is one of the first places to arrive after the bridge from the mainland.

Sights in Njivice

Old Town Harbor
The heart of Njivice is the charming old town and harbor. Stroll along the great waterfront where traditional fishing boats moor next to modern yachts. The old town, with its narrow streets lined with stone houses, quaint cafes and local shops, offers a glimpse into the town’s history and culture.

Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
This beautiful church is one of Njivice’s most important landmarks. Built in the 18th century, the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is known for its elegant architecture and tranquil atmosphere. The interior is decorated with elaborate frescoes and religious artifacts.

Roman Villa
The ruins of a Roman villa are located on the outskirts of Njivice. This archaeological site offers a fascinating insight into the region’s ancient history. The remains of the villa include mosaic floors and the foundations of various rooms, illustrating the lavish lifestyle of the Roman elite.

Omišalj

Omišalj is another beautiful village or small town in the northwest of the Croatian island of Krk just a few kilometers from Njevice. Omišalj is 85 meters above sea level and is one of the first settlements you come across when crossing the Krk Bridge from the mainland. Omišalj is less touristy than Njevice. This is mainly due to its location. The center of the town is not directly on the sea.

The old town of Omišalj has retained much of its old charm, with winding cobbled streets and tightly packed houses. The main sights include the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with its bell tower, the Town Castle and the Chapel of Saint Helena. The town is also known for Dubec Park and the ruins of an early Christian cathedral from the 5th century.
