History of the Town of Krk

The town of Krk has a rich history that dates back over 2,000 years. Originally settled by the Illyrians and later conquered by the Romans, Krk was conquered by various powers, including the Byzantine, Venetian and Austrian rule. The town’s historical importance is evident in its well-preserved architecture, ancient city walls and numerous archaeological sites.

Getting to Krk

The nearest airport is Rijeka Airport, which is located on the island itself, about 25 kilometers from the town of Krk. Visitors can also arrive by ferry from the mainland or from other Croatian islands such as Rab and Cres. By car, the island of Krk is connected to the mainland by a bridge, making it easily accessible from the larger Croatian cities. This bridge is also used by long-distance buses to and from Rijeka and Zagreb, among others. There is no railway to the island of Krk.

Krk Cathedral (Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary)
The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is one of the most important landmarks in the town of Krk. This Romanesque cathedral was built in the 5th century and features an impressive bell tower, elaborate frescoes and beautiful interiors. The cathedral is a must-see for anyone interested in religious architecture and history. Arguably the most important building on the island.

Castle
Built in the 12th century by the powerful Franco-Pan family, the eponymous Franco-Pan Castle is a well-preserved fortress that offers panoramic views of the town and the sea. Visitors can explore the castle’s towers, ramparts and courtyards and learn about its historical significance through informative exhibitions.

Town Walls and Gates
The town of Krk is surrounded by ancient walls and gates that date back to Roman times. The best-preserved section is Kamplin Square, where visitors can see the remains of the fortifications and take a leisurely stroll along the historic paths.

Zipline Krk
A modern attraction for tourists. Adrenaline and adventure. Hanging from ropes, holidaymakers rush through the mountains. Not exactly cheap, but a great experience. A few kilometers outside the town.   More info Zipline Krk on this link

Vela Placa (Main Town Square)
Vela Placa is the vibrant center of the town of Krk. The picturesque square is surrounded by historic buildings, cafes and shops and invites you to linger and enjoy the city atmosphere. Events and festivals are often held on the square, adding to its lively charm. About 100 meters behind the Uder promenade.

St. Quirinus Church
Located near the cathedral, St. Quirinus Church is a fine example of Romanesque architecture. The church houses a collection of religious artifacts and offers a peaceful retreat for visitors.

Volsonis Roman Forum
The Volsonis Roman Forum is an archaeological site located beneath a popular bar in Krk Town. Visitors can explore the ancient ruins, which include remains of Roman buildings and mosaics, while enjoying a drink in a unique setting.

Krk Aquarium
There are two aquariums in town. One focuses more on the fish and other marine life in the local Mediterranean Sea, and the other focuses on tropical marine life. Both are not too big, but modern and worth seeing. The Mediterranean Aquarium is right in the town center.

Submarine Krk

A great tour to explore the underwater world with lots of fish and other sea creatures around Krk is a trip in a submarine. Starts daily in the season in the center of Krk town. Boat tour Krk

In Punat at the harbor in the center a few kilometers from Krk town, the most popular boat tour on Krk (day tour) among tourists starts, the “5 island tour”. You can see several islands, often vultures and the famous Blue Cave. There are also stops for swimming and much more. Well done and varied. Great atmosphere. Beaches in the town of Krk

Porporela beach
Porporela beach is one of the most popular beaches in the town of Krk. This pebble beach offers clear, shallow water, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The beach is well equipped with sun loungers, parasols and cafes nearby. >About 1 km from the center.

Drazica beach
Located just a short walk from the town center, Drazica beach is a beautiful sandy beach surrounded by pine trees. The beach is quiet and family-friendly and offers numerous amenities such as changing rooms, showers and a beach bar.

Punta di Galletto Beach
Punta di Galletto Beach is a secluded spot that offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the beach. This rocky beach with crystal clear waters and a tranquil atmosphere is ideal for relaxing. Access to the beach is via a beautiful path through a pine forest.

Koralj Beach
Koralj Beach is another popular beach in Krk Town known for its beautiful surroundings and crystal clear waters. The beach is a great spot for adventurous travelers as it offers a variety of water activities including paddleboarding and jet skiing. About 1.5 km east of the town center.

Jezebac Beach
Located near a large and popular campsite, Jezebac Beach is a well-maintained beach with a mix of pebbles and sand. The beach has numerous facilities such as sun loungers, parasols and a beach bar, making it an ideal place to spend a day by the sea. Located about 2 km south of the city center along the shore.
