Plitvice Lakes National Park is a stunning nature reserve in the centre of Croatia and one of the country’s most popular destinations. Famous for its 16 crystal clear interconnected lakes, waterfalls and diverse vegetation, this park is a must-see for any traveller to Croatia.

Entrance fees: To visit the national park, you have to pay an entrance fee. The money is used to maintain the Plitvice Lakes Park and limit the number of visitors. The entrance fee is high in summer (beginning of June to end of September) and low in winter. One of the main attractions of Plitvice Lakes National Park is the series of waterfalls that flow between the park’s 16 lakes. The size of the waterfalls ranges from small cascades to massive waterfalls plunging into deep pools. Visitors can explore the waterfalls on winding hiking trails along the park’s lush forests and lakeshores. Plitvice Lakes National Park has many other natural and cultural attractions to offer besides the waterfalls.

The park is a haven for wildlife and is home to many rare and endangered species and is also an important habitat for birds.

Opening hours of Plitvice Lakes National Park: Daily 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., every day of the year. Be aware of early nightfall in winter. There are free boats and trains in the park that run around the same time as opening hours. Be careful, in winter many things are closed in and around the national park due to the low number of visitors (restaurants, shops, camping, accommodation, etc.).

The park also has a rich cultural heritage with many traditional villages and historical sites within its borders.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is a popular recreational area with activities such as hiking, fishing and kayaking. Visitors can explore the park on foot or by boat.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is located in central Croatia, about 130 km (80 miles) south of Zagreb and 240 km (150 miles) north of Split. The park is easily accessible by car, bus or organised tours.

Tickets for Croatia’s most famous national park are available on the German website Getyourguide, among others. The prices here are no higher than at the ticket office on site. In summer you pay 40 euros (!) for a day ticket for adults, children and students pay less. Outside of the high season, adults only pay 10 to 25 euros, depending on the time of year. Prices as of 2024.

Car:
If you are driving to Plitvice Lakes, the main entrance to the park is near the town of Korenica, just off the D1 motorway. There is ample parking, but it fills up quickly in season, so we recommend arriving early in the morning.

Bus:
Several bus companies offer regular connections to the park from the larger towns in Croatia. The bus stop is located near entrance 2 to the park.

Organised tours:
Many tour operators offer day trips to Plitvice Lakes National Park from Zagreb, Zadar and other nearby towns. These tours usually include transport, park entrance fee and a guided tour of the park.

If you are travelling from outside Croatia, the nearest international airports are Zagreb and Zadar. From there you can rent a car, join a bus or an organised tour, or hire a private transfer to the park.
